Hello BYC Community,

This is my first time ever incubating eggs and having eggs hatch. So far I had 8 eggs hatch without any issues and those chicks are doing well.

I have 1 chick that pipped his shell sometime overnight while I was sleeping (sometime between 12am-8am on 4/24). After doing some research and reading, I allowed it to have 12 hours or so to see if he made any progress. Yesterday night, before bed I took some of the shell off and increased humidity to see if he would make progress overnight. I woke up this morning and I am seeing that he has not made any progress, seems to be stuck. The white membrane seems to be turning yellow around the pip. Last night I saw some red blood vessels within the inner membrane and today I am not seeing them.

From the research I have done so far, I am planning to assist by getting a warm paper tower and press it gently against the membrane and use some tweezers to try and remove more shell and potentially some of the white membrane (I may also use some vaseline)

Please let me know if you all agree with my plan of attack. Please let me know of any suggestions, guidance etc. I appreciate the help in advance!

I am certainly not an old hand here, but if it were me I'd do exactly what you suggested. I've had to do this with a few eggs and it worked well. Just be mindful of any veins. It's really not that tricky if you're careful. Best luck

UPDATE:

I ended up assisting the chick hatch by using warm water on paper towel, vaseline and tweezers. Some of the inner membrane was stuck to him which seem to be preventing him from moving and hatching. I removed membrane that did not have any blood vessels and I stopped when I saw RED. The chick ended up kicking himself out when I was putting him back in the incubator.

This is how he currently looks. He is laying on his side, breathing, moves his head and legs and sometimes chirping.

I am planning to leave him in the incubator for a few hours or more to see if he starts moving and walking.

From the looks of the pictures, do you all think I did this properly? Does it looks like I messed up?

Anything I should do to help this chick? From the looks of it, do you guys think he will be fine?

Thank you all for all your help!

Hello, Thank you very much for your response. I ended up assisting the chick. I am hoping that they make it. Please see my new post and pictures if you are able to.

Thank you
