Need the right advice re: 1-day old chick supplies

The only good trick I've read about for those pesky Vertical Nipples,
is to put a shallow dish like a large jar lid filled with pea gravel under it.
Will catch drips, prevent chicks from getting wet feet or drowning.
It will have to be cleaned daily tho.

Would marbles work? I got them for a chick waterer and I have lots of extras, but they are pretty big.

Might be too big and round for stable footing.
Maybe just use chick waterer with the marbles, that's what I use before they get the hang if the Horizontal Nipples I use.
I put the chick waterer up on a sand filled 8 or 16oz sour cream container to keep bedding out of it.
