Need To Know Breeding Basics

very informative for me as well as i just got into show birds.... i also have a question if OP doesnt mind...is it totally awful to breed in flocks of 8-10 when breeding show birds because i have alot of good birds but bot alot of room for like 5 pairs of each breed.

Well that depends on who you ask. I know of a few people that do that and they have some of the best birds (in their chosen breed) around. If you do decide to do this, it is still best to try to pick females that look similar. You still, in my opinion, should have at least two pens like this though. You should never just breed from one male each year. My advice is to experiment and go with what works best for you. Another option, which is hard, is to reduce the number of breeds you raise. Generally, the less breeds, the better you can get your birds, unless you have tons and tons of space.

I like to keep my breeding birds in trios. That way I know which chick came from who, so I can keep track of which pairing is producing the best chicks. Since I want to know which egg is from which hen, I put food dye in the butts of the hens, it lasts about 5-7 days, and they lay eggs with dye on them. That way I can write on the egg which hen laid which egg, and keep track of the offsprings mother and father.
