Hello there! Chicken math has finally caught up with me and we need to expand. My husband built a 5x6 insulated coop, same as the one pictured. We had 9 hens living comfortably in it for the past 4 years. Now we’re down to 7 hens, but I have 14 chicks arriving at the end of the month. So 7+14=21 and that’s too many chickens for our coop.
We have a full size enclosed run attached that is 5x10 (and the chickens can go under the coop, extra space not included). They rarely free range, but we may expand the enclosed run to a much bigger area. We live in Alaska with heavy snow and freezing temps, so they spend a lot of time inside during the winter (their choice).
With that said, what should we do with our coop? My husband is willing to build whatever size I want. We don’t want to overspend though. Do we need a whole new coop or can we somehow expand our current one? We may just end up building the same style, but bigger.
Current breeds are Red star x2 and barnyard mix x5
New chickens will be - Americana x4, Sapphire Olive Egger x4, Golden Comet x4, and Silver Laced Wyandotte x2
