Neighbor threatening me and another neighbor about chickens

Oh, great. Now I'll be singing THAT song all day. Sigh.

Sorry. That's the WORST, isn't it?

I don't know how noisy donkeys are, but I can tell you that a peacock can be heard for miles around and they make the most grating sound like a woman screaming for help in the woods. It is seriously unnerving.

Female guineas make pretty obnoxious very loud noises, too.

To me directly, twice. She told the neighbor across the street they will be calling the police if they hear a rooster at any time from either of our houses. Her reasoning is that she hates chickens.

My chickens are in a fully enclosed coop and chicken run. The coop is 100% black inside unless I turn on the light or open the door, whih is at 8am or so. Someone would have to cut the wire in order to get through. I clean the coop about 5 times a day. We told her before we even bought the chickens that we were not planning on having a rooster this flock of chickens. I don't know why she is threatening me and the neighbor across the street. Her threats started after we told her our plans. We even hear her talk to the other neighbors about it as well. Now that the threats started, I'm very tempted to go out and get one. lol

We are allowed roosters, we did check. That's when I found out we can have 100 chickens per grazable acre. We are allowed 1 horse per acre as well.

I would begin by saying I USED to like you and THOUGHT you were a nice, decent person, but obviously I was mistaken about your character. Then I would tell her two things. First, if she harassed me about something I had that was legal I would call the police on HER for harassment. Second, I would tell her that if her dog bothered my pets I would trap him and find him a new home and that I would sue her for any damages he caused, pets he killed, and that I would take any poop he left behind and smear it on the front door of her house. And I would say it all with the biggest, friendliest smile I could muster. Then I'd fence my yard and buy at least a dozen roosters.

I am really sorry to hear all about this. It is my thoughts that I would keep a paper trail as mentioned above, and I think a visit to the local police station may be in order. This is your property, and if the city ordinances say you can have livestock, then you should be free to have livestock. The other option would be to suggest she move back to the city!

Get some guineas

I'd just have a pen of all roosters. Confined well and dog proof.

I'm not a person who could just shoot a dog out of the blue either, but if it came down to a dog trying to kill my babies, that dog would be gone and the buzzards would be getting a free meal.

I live in the city with not even half an acre of land and my neighbors love my birds. The only ones who dont are my Aunt and Uncle down the street. I have 11 quail (3 roos and the rest hens) and 20 chickens (7 roos and the rest hens)

If it becomes a problem go through legal means first, and if it continues by her dogs harassing your chickens on your property, you have every right to defend your livestock, property or what have you. I will be in the same boat soon, not with nasty nieghbors, but a dog that roams around the area. Here I have fox, coyotes, coons, hawks, bobcat, weasels ect, and I'm worried about a local mutt. It might disappear come hunting season. Good Luck with your situation.

My parents live in the neighborhood where there is a peacock. They are extremely noisy. They make the most awful noises. I'm not really interested in peafowl.lol. I wouldn't even attempt it.

Wow. Your chickens don't even free-range? What a nut! It sounds like keeping peace is not in the cards as she has sounded the war siren. I'm astonished that she's being so outspoken and hostile about the issue that doesn't even affect her. Regardless, you ought not feel compelled to keep your chickens confined or in a dark coop just because of her neuroses. Treat the chickens they way you would if she were a fan of fowl herself. There are legal consequences if she harms your chickens, both civil and criminal. If she wants to risk her own personal liberty and financial security for her alektorophobia- let her.

Definitely put something in writing to the police department so that there's a record of it and then just keep a close eye on things and notify the police of any problems at all. Good luck and sorry you have to worry about this. Hang in there and know that you have lots of support here and all around the world.

Seriously. When we put our offer in for this house "in the country" we had to sign a "right to farm" paper. Basically all it says is the farmers have the right to farm and we have the right to shut up about it, participate in it, or GTFO. The "legalese" was a little more sophisticated, obviously, but if I wrote it up, yeah, that's exactly what it would say.
