Hi!

I'm brand new to raising chickens! My fiance and I have three cats and a dog and I convinced him that chickens in our suburban home were exactly what we needed! He's actually super excited as well.

Eventually we'd like to one day move out to the country and have a farm/homestead but for now we have two properties in Oklahoma that we're maintaining.

Recently we got five baby chicks although we lost one on the first night so now we have four. They're living in the bathtub in the guest bathroom that is never used until the weather warms up, they get bigger, and we can put them outside.

I'm excited to browse plans for coops and plan how best to accommodate them in my yard!

Glad you could join the flock! Love your pics they are very cute chicks :thumbsup I too can't resist little chicks, enjoy them while they are small as they grow amazingly fast! Good luck with them and hope you are able to move out to the country, that too is my aim to have a small farm so I can have my horse at home and grow my flock some more!!

We're not sure what breeds they are. We drove an hour to a smaller town and got them from a farmer. He had a lot of different breeds mixed together so we let my nephew pick out which ones he wanted. We were assured they would be good laying breeds and we could return any roosters. Our city limits the amount we can have to 6 hens w/ no roosters allowed. :(
 
I am new also... I ordered the chicks from a breeder 2 1/2 hours from my home. I spent most of Sunday in the car with my husband, who lovingly did all of the driving, and 2 dear friends who are always up for an adventure. It was 19 degrees outside, when we arrived. I took precautions, I brought an insulated box, with hand warmers(actually shoe warmers) wrapped in a towel. We rode home in the hottest vehicle on the road, but the chicks were happy. Besides who can resist cute little fluffy balls of cheep, cheep? I carefully chose 6 different breeds, I wanted to be able to quickly identify them.

Silver Laced Wyandotte, (2)
Light Brahma
Easter Egger

I did not grow up with farm animals, this is the first for me. Cats, dogs, yes. I never knew how much enjoyment you can get from watching 6 day old chicks scurrying about. I wanted to be sure I knew what I was getting into, so I researched for about 6 months before deciding that, YES, I want to raise some Backyard Chickens. I have posted some pictures on Facebook, my friends, keep asking me if I have done lost my mind? My children are grown, I said. I need something to take care of... My husband just keeps telling me to make more cookies for him to eat..That he is the one that I should be taking care of. Well, after 26 years of marriage, I think I must be doing something right. Besides this way I can have fresh eggs for those cookies he is always asking me to make. He is always supportive, no matter what cockamamie ideas I get. The poor man had to cut down 5 trees to make way for our chicken coop. Not to mention, giving up part of his outdoor "man cave", the man loves to cut trees and burn wood. The coop will be taking up some of the cut wood storage space, he keeps telling me. How much wood does one man need, anyhow?

The chicks are about 6-7 days old, doing great, and growing fast! My grown daughters have helped me name them all. So much fun.. Thanks to Backyard Chickens for having a space to "talk" chickens!
