(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, totally new to chickens! I saw an ad on Craigslist that someone was giving away a free laying hen that was about 2yrs old. I contacted them, ran to the farm store to grab some supplies, then grabbed the hen. I named her Henny
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I loved my hen so much, but needed some mates for her...but was nearly impossible in winter! So, I ordered 12 fertilized eggs from Amazon!
Incubated and hatched 6 chickies on 1/8/25. I have 7 chickens now!
(3) What breeds do you have?
I believe Henny is a Sapphire Gem. The chickies (Shelley, Blondie, Ebenezer, Oswald, Biff, and Pippy) are barnyard mixes, so I'm not sure. They're 12wks old now, so I will take some pics and ask y'all's opinions on their breeds I love them so much!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Henny was laying almost an egg a day since the 1st day I got her, so THAT was amazing! She's been molting, so no eggs for the past 6wks. I LOVE being in the chicken community - Facebook, reddit, now here! Also, I'm starting to work on my garden so I can grow food for my chickies - using their poopies and composting. Ah, nature!
Everything the chickens have brought me to makes me so friggin happy!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love cooking, baking, video games, cats, chickens, gardening, and endlessly scrolling on YouTube and reddit.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live with my sister, 4 cats, and 7 chickens. Was a total crazy cat lady (had 8 cats at one time before!), so now I'm also a crazy chicken lady!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I joined a backyard chicken group on fb maybe about a year ago because I enjoyed the posts...didn't know I would end up a crazy chicken lady!
I would look up things about chickens and more often than not, I would be directed to a BYC post. Just now, I looked up the deep litter method and brought me to a post here - decided I might as well join, so here I am!!
