(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes! This is my first time having chickens of my own. I grew up on a small farm around chickens until I was 9 when I moved to Connecticut. Given that I was 9 I wasn't really allowed in the chicken coop on my Grandmother's farm and don't really remember a lot about her chickens either. I have always loved chickens though and have always been fascinated by them! Now that I'm 20 I was excited to start a flock of my own! I got my chickens a little over a month ago!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently I have 6 Chickens! They were rescues from a neighbor up the road who didn't really care for them all that well.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 2 of each breed! Currently my flock consists of Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, and Black Laced Wyandottes!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I absolutely LOVE getting to watch them and interact with them! I love getting fresh eggs every morning too. Currently I am caring for my Neighbor's 14 chickens in addition to my 6 while she is off at a medical facility (she is ok). I love how diverse her flock is and how loving and sweet her chickens are! I am fascinated by their love of human interaction. I am also absolutely OBSESSED with her silkies!!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
As for other hobbies I LOVE video games and crafts. Anything to do with animals really. I adore spending time with my cat and my boyfriend. Baking and hiking are also things I enjoy in my free time!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My cat, Harley, is quite the adventure kitty! She LOVES her car rides and going on walks with her harness. She recently turned a year old and so far she has been an absolute delight! I currently live with my Mother & Father and my brother is away at trade school but comes home on the weekends. As for other pets I have a Dwarf Rabbit who will be turning 6 very soon. His name is Oreo. I have 2 dogs, A German Shepherd (Levi), and a Husky (Bandit)! 2 Hermit Crabs (Houdini & Link). And a handful of fish!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Found out about it today actually! I was googling behavioral issues in chickens and how to correct them and encourage positive interactions within my flock and this popped up! I joined because upon reading a few of the threads I felt like this would be a really good resource to have moving forward!
