Hello! My name is Sarah Siewiyumptewa from Colorado:)
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes and no. My MIL had a flock that I helped feed and collect eggs from but as far as ownership, I'm brand new and have my first flock members arriving in May.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None): A raccoon wiped our coop out.
(3) What breeds do you have? (Coming May*)
  • Wyandotte: Gold & Silver Laced, BBS Laced Red
  • Orpington: BBS & Lavender
  • Black Copper Maran
  • Double-laced Barnevelder
  • Blue/Black Favaucana
  • Easter-Eggers
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Aside the obvious advantage of meat & eggs... I'm fascinated by the domestic dinosaur descendants.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I have ADHD, it's easier to say what ISN'T a hobby I haven't tried.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm married to my 'high-school sweetheart' of 10 years with 3 awesome, rowdy children (& my moody teen sister I have custody of). We have a farm cat named Pepper that has a crooked half-tail, a shepsky named Bruno that some days I'm not sure is an actual dog, and a rambunctious puppy named Reina we found in a King Soopers parking lot. Not to mention our 4 pigs; Miss Piggy, Hamlet, Bluey & Odin, my husband's horse Luna - and Socks, the one cow in my MIL's angus herd that was a surprise baby from a rogue bull that has a white face & horns. All of that and I still want more responsibility. What is wrong with me?

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found BYC when I went down a rabbit hole after losing the last of our flock over the holidays. I'm starting 100% from scratch and found some great designs through here and lots of amazing information for me to start this journey on my own. I wanted to be someplace I can express my achievements and excitement with like-minded folks!

Hiya, Sarah, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Nice intro, but sad about the raccoon. Are you having to build a new coop raccoons can't get into? If so, we have a Coop Forum for ideas or even some with complete building instructions. Otherwise, 1/2" hardware cloth keeps them out.

Congrats on the incoming chicks! Fun times begin soon! :jumpy

Yes, and hawks. I love my MIL dearly but the coop she put together really just wasn't suitable after the first year and my complaints went unheard because I'm the inexperienced one here. Now that my husband & I are in a position to start 'taking things over' and renovating, finally - I found a great plan from this site that I'm going to modify:) It'll be a 14'x8' coop with a 21'x12' run & 1/2" hardware cloth is definitely on the list! Thank you, I'm beyond excited!! If you have any tips on appropriate brooder sizing for 15, please share!

So you're in Colorado, meaning, you'll have these cherubs in your house for about 6 weeks at least. In the beginning, they'd be fine in something 4' -5' wide so you can put a heat lamp on one end and their food/water in the other side where they can get away from the heat. That'll last no more than two weeks.

How about a pet pen something like this when they outgrow the first one? We used one for a while, but getting at them on my hands and knees was becoming a drudgery. We then built two DIY wooden brooders, but that wouldn't pay to build one if you're only doing this once every blue moon or so.
