Hello
I’m Jeanette, a new chicken mom but I’m not new to chickens. My family had chickens off and on growing up and we (the kids) were tasked with feeding/watering and gathering eggs. What I’m new to is the actual caring for the chickens. You know: what’s the best feed, what do I do when they get sick or injured, how do I winterize and keep them alive in the grueling summers, so on and so forth. Hence finding this forum has been an absolute thrill !! I’ve been doing a lot of researching ( so much research) and I’ve joined a bunch of FB private groups ( very interesting and thought provoking stuff). So I will answer all the introduction questions as best as I can. I added a picture of my small flock of raptors. Thanks again for allowing me to join and I look forward to all the perks!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Not new but new to the “care” of chickens. First got my chickens in November 2023.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I have 3 hens and 1 rooster
(3) What breeds do you have? I have 2 RIR hens, 1 Barred Rock hen and my Roo is a beautiful farm house mutt.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? They bring me calm and peace just watching them go about their business. Much like some people like watching fish in a tank. I love the eggs, of course.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I enjoy camping & hiking with my DH and my 2 doggo’s. We love going to the beach and traveling when we can. I’m about to embark on gardening, canning and freeze drying in 2024.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. DH and I just built a house on a 5.5 acre plot in the country. We have neighbors on all 4 sides and I can see them but I can’t throw a rock and hit their house/barn/car/tractor from any edge of my property line. And I LOVE that. DH and I are empty nesters and about 10-15 years away from retirement age and wanted to slow down the rat race and pick up on a more laid back way of life. A few chickens, a garden and our dogs.
My occupation: I’m a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) and a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) currently working PRN (as needed).
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I found ya’ll while googling questions about caring for chickens. Every time I’d google a question… There ya’ll were! So I decided I better join!
