New Chicken mom!

Hey hey!! New chicken momma here!! And live in Central Florida! Just wanting about 4/6 hens and have a full fenced in backyard! Wondering which breeds are better more for pets and possibly eggs. Also any tips on keeping snakes and other predators like spiders away from coop?
Welcome! So glad you are here! I found that I like a mixture of breeds, usually 2 of each. I find brahmas and buff orpingtons very friendly. Also black Austrolorps, too. 😀

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

I am a fan of Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps, Orps are such a healthy hardy breed. Definitely use hardware cloth on all external areas of the coop and run. We have Rattlers out here, I was getting baby snakes slithering in through 1/2 inch hardware cloth so I covered the bottom 3 ft of the run with 1/4 hardware cloth and that fixed the snake issue. Anyway permethrin spray will take care of the spider issues.

Welcome to BYC
Here is a few suggestions I found...

1: Clear the Area Around the Chicken Coop.
2: Use Hardware Mesh and Sink Your Fencing Deep Underground.
3: Keep Feed Sealed and Eliminate Places Where Water Can Accumulate.
4: Grow Plants That Keep Snakes Away.
