Hello there, my husband and I are fairly new to chickens, we've had ours since April and raised them from hatchlings at our home in Southern WV. Boy that was rough sometimes, ha! We decided to get into this partially as a means to feed our family healthier, home grown meals but also partially as a hobby. I grew up on a farm and really enjoyed that lifestyle so slowly, we are trying to get back to that.
We currently have three hens, one Rhode Island red and two black australorps and one white leghorn rooster. We had others but have lost several along the way. Our rooster has been tough to keep alive; he has had a multitude of injuries and has spent much of his time living in the house during recoveries which has now left him extremely friendly but also with a permanent unusual walking pattern. We love him anyway. My favorite part of having chickens is feeding them and watching them all go nuts over treats!
Im a full time mom so I don't have a large amount of free time and that's also why I love our chickens, they are still easy keepers on days that I barely have time to get out to check on them.

I also enioy being crafty with painting and making things. I've recently been trying to teach myself how do some simple wood working. My husband is a diesel mechanic so he is gone six days per week for 12+ hours a day; needless to say he doesnt have time for a lot of hobbies. We enjoy reading our bibles together and attending church regularly. We also both really enjoy gardening, although we are new to that as well. We hope to expand our livestock knowledge someday and eventually learn to can and preserve food and raise a cow for milk and meats. My parents own a large piece of property, which my older sister has already built a home on, so once we are able to move to a larger plot of land we can pursue more of a "homesteading" type of lifestyle.
Im so glad we found this community to ask questions and read informative articles to hopefully ensure our success with our backyard chickens! I actually stumbled upon this page by googling how to harvest poultry at home.

Thanks so much for having us!
