i live nearly smack in the center of the CLE and I love it, but I never thought that I would be able to have my own chicks while I lived in the city. Then I bought a house in a Latino community and there were city chickens all over the place. Beautiful homes and yards, lots of laughing kids and proud parents and vegi gardens and chickens! It blew my mind. Years later I move again and after years of wanting a chicken I finally have some. Originally I only wanted a chicken, but they don’t come that way at the TSP, so six it was. I got what they told me was a Silkie (I think it might be an actual bird, like a yard bird)I named Napoleon, two Isa Browns named Henrietta and Hildegard, and one Cornish Rock cross that I named Enchilada. I also gave my wonderful neighbor an Isa Brown And a Cornish. We have four cats (DJ Screw, Shwanky, Kira, and Eddie) and one dog named Jessica. The cats love herding the chicks about the house but Jessica just wants to eat them. We are all having some level of anxiety about processing Enchilada and the neighbor’s Cross, ranging from emotional discomfort to all out dread, anxiety and crying. We love our guy, so it’s is hard to think of him as food. I am sure he will be delicious though. I really didn’t think that I would be the nervous about raising my chickens, but their behavior has m both laughing and scared out of my mind most of the time.
We are glad you joined our flock.

Did you know you were buying a meat bird when you bought the Cornish X?

Kind of, I thought it was more a choice of whether or not we wanted to make it a meat bird. I wanted a roo to protect my girls from predators. I then learned a lot more about this kind of chicken and realized that it’s life is going to be short no matter what I want, also I learned we aren’t actually allowed to have roosters in CLE. I researched way to make him not want to crow, as not to disturb my new neighbors, but it looks like we are going to eat him and his brother. I am sure I am going to be a squealing shaky mess by the time it’s all said and done. For now I just make sure he is cuddled and loved and babied. He is the favorite around here. My Silkie has four toes, pail skin and no fluffs. She...or he...does have feathered feet though.
