Hello! My husband and I live on acreage in Polk County, FL. We started getting into the chicken world last year, and now we are increasing our flock to accommodate the long waiting list of people wanting fresh eggs. We are still learning, and are here to gain insight from long-time farmers as well as newbies alike. We currently have 35 laying hens, 20 teens, and about 45 babies waiting to grow!
Are we new to chickens? We first got chickens in March of 2024 when a couple was moving into an RV and could no longer keep their beautiful flock.
How many chickens do we have right now? Too many! We add to our flock annually to keep a rotation in case we have loss of production.
What breeds do we have? We have mostly black australorps, a few silkies, rhode island reds, golden comets, cinnamon queens, a couple americaunas, couple california greys... we try to keep a variation!
What are our favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? We started our egg story by giving them away to people at our church and now we have others wanting to buy. We love getting feedback and hearing our eggs taste so much better than store bought, and knowing we are providing for people in need is a huge driver!
Our family/pets/etc....... its just my husband and I for now, we eagerly await the blessing of a growing family. We are in our late-twenties and are having fun building our farm. We have four cats and a dog, as well as our large flock. We hope to gain goats, cows, and more within the next few years!
