We had chickens a couple of years ago, unfortunately they all got taken by hawks. We live way out in the country in the open, so there’s no way to avoid them. So I joined BYC because I’ve found a lot of helpful advice here and I want to do it right this time.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry about your chickens. Ironically, today I saw a bald eagle come pretty low then dart up. There's one nest of them we know of about 1/2 mile from here. They usually have better eyesight, so don't come near here because we have a 125' tower for internet in our yard with 3 sets of 3 (9) guy wires that come down.

For areas those aren't, we have giant 10' tall wind spinners and some shorter ones. We keep a picnic table on our side that borders a farmer's field, so they have some cover if one comes from that direction.

We've also got some things you can hang and they spin. Not sure what those are called but one of ours is a parrot with streamers coming down.

I've heard of stringing like 20# or heavier fishing line between trees or wherever you can string it at least 6' high so people can't run into it. That is said to confuse them so they won't come down.

Good luck with your next venture to try create a hawk/eagle free zone for your chickens!
