I'm not sure where you read about the horrible hatch rate for first-time hatchers, but stick with us here, as you shouldn't get steered wrong again.
Yes, hatch rate gets better as you keep doing it, but still, you should have done better. I realize you're glad you didn't. 
A hygrometer/thermometer is a must, as you've learned. I have three large incubators. One used to be right, but lately that one's off by half a degree too. I have several Govee devices, and I calibrate them about once a month. They stay pretty solid!
