New to brooding outside

Update on our batch of chicks:
Not good. Ordered 17 total, cackle sent 20, only one survived transit. The one survivor is a tough little thing. In order for her (may be a he as there were roosters in the order as well) to have the best chance I ran to tsc after work to get her some company and thankfully they had a few chicks left. Brought 5 home with me and she was clearly excited to not be alone. She has already made a friend from the new batch and they were chasing each other around the brooder box. Will be getting more chicks but probably only if I can find what I was looking for locally.

Picture of our lone survivor Easter egger and what is supposed to be an Americana.
Very sad to hear that, but I'm glad you were able to pick up some chicks on the fly, which seems to be a tall order this year.

The "Americana" is an EE, different name for the same thing.

Yes I called ahead and they said they had just gotten them in two hours ago and there were only 20 or so left by the time I got there. I figured the survivors best chance was with company rather than on her own. They are doing well. All eating and drinking and running around.
So we got our Easter eggers after all? I was hoping for a little more variety this year as far as eggs go. I had ordered welsummers, Easter eggers and Delawares to add some new color and size to our egg collections. I was watching the shipping tracker closely and when I saw they say in Memphis for two days my stomach turned and I knew we were going to be dealing with some losses. I didn’t think it would have been nearly all of them.

EEs aren't a standardized breed so often sold under different names, and Americana (or any spelling variant of that) is one of them. So yes, if you were hoping for some color variation in your basket, you should have some here.

When our farm was in Upstate NY a hen, whom I thought had died, showed up with chicks. It was in the middle of winter temperatures not getting above freezing during the day. I saw her heading to the coop, trudging through the snow with her chicks stumbling along behind her...
A Broody will care for her chicks no matter what.
