We just moved from Alaska to NC, and now have a small flock of 6 hens and a rooster, all mixed breed French Copper Maran. They are primarily olive and moss eggers.
I joined because when I got these 3 week old chicks, one quickly developed sour crop and I'm pretty sure the whole lot of them had worms. Couldn't get wazine and other wormers don't seem to be safe for chickens forming feathers. I have kept chickens off and on for nearly 30 years (in the North) and never once had a problem with sour crop or excessive worms. I'm grateful for the forums here that informed me of what to do.
I did end up purging the crop of the chick with the problem about 3 times. I separated her from the others, fed her scrambled eggs, greek yogurt, and a tiny amount of monistat morning and night for 5 days, along with garlic water (also with a syringe), and put chopped garlic in the other chicken's water along with the ACV. The whole flock has been fine for the 10 days and have moved into the barn with a brooder lamp.
So, that has been my fast and furious intro to living in the south. Everything grows well here. Then again, everything grows well here
