New to BYC from Virginia

I don't think you'll be disappointed with a Barred Rock. If they have Cuckoo Marans, I love mine. I have both breeds.

Easter Eggers should do fine in a closed run. They are mixed breeds, so maybe not as predictable in temperament as others, but that probably goes with all chickens having their own personality.

If they have Speckled Sussex, that is another favorite of mine.

Sorry, that probably didn't help you choose, but that's why chickens are addicting! It's hard to just pick a few!

No, this is very helpful, thank you. I have been eyeing the Speckled Sussex. They are simply lovely! Of all you've noted, which do you think might be best for a newbie such as myself?

Its very hard to say how individual chickens will behave.
My first flock had a sweet barred rock and a speckled sussex that was so mean, that I swore I'd never have another one.
A few years ago I was in tsc and there was a chick making an awful racket. She was a speckled sussex and was the only one left in her bin. She had pasty butt too. I took her home. I still have her and she is a sweetheart, not a bully like the first one.
They are just hard to predict. I've had several crested cream legbars and they have all been good natured and very tame, but thats the only breed I've had thats been consistent.

Yes, I understand this all too well. My parrots of the same breed have had drastically different personalities. Much like my dogs; however, we seem to "mold" very sweet (and sometimes very stubbron) pups. I have no idea why, but I seem to have an aversion to photos of barred rocks. Then again, I had an aversion to a photo the breeder sent of my eldest pup, Ella, who is one of the many loves of my life. Go figure!

Re: chicken addiction, for the sake of my marriage I am grateful to have limitations based on city ordinances. My partner has tolerated a full zoo over the span of 27 years.....and he always falls for them!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
While I am not new to bird keeping (macaw, parrotlet, cockatiels), I am new to chickens. We have just purchased a coop and am now placing an order for my first small/urban flock of six hens which are permitted by the city.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
At present, we do not have any chickens.

(3) What breeds do you have?
As we are restricted to six hens, we plan to have a mixed flock that includes the following: french black copper marans, blue cochin, light brahma, buff orpington, black australorp, and ????

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
To be determined.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Among others, my primary hobbies include teaching my two 8-yo standard poodles new tricks (sharp little buggers), outdoor square foot gardening during the spring/summer and indoor hydroponic gardening year round.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a college professor and now dedicate the majority of my time conducting cancer prevention research.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I happened upon this site serveral times while searching for information about chicken keeping. My decision to join was based on much of the information that I read and an understanding that I would benefit from the years of experience of many members.
Welcome thanks for joinin'!!!

I will need it. Just placed my first order and could not come up with the sixth breed so I let them select it. The person chose a barred rock. Interestingly, that was precisely the breed I did not want (too many mixed commentaries re: disposition/temperament and bullying). I will either do more homework and change the last one or simply let the chips fall where they may and hope for the best.
I really like the barred rock ❤️

:thumbsup That's the way in this household too. When we had a large house and land, dogs just happened to find their way to us and we ended up with probably too many. Now, birds. I 'got bit by the chicken bug and haven't been the same since' I'm told. Wish we too could have more than a few due to local restrictions. I'll say "I can't wait until we can have a couple dozen chickens" - I just get the look. I think he knows better than to say anything - lol. He gets easily attached and cries with every loss too. I probably shouldn't have revealed that...
