Hi! I am new to the chicken thing. I live in Greensboro, NC. We have 4 6 week old pullets upstairs in a refrigerator box and are building the walk-in coop this weekend.

We have 4 Buff Orps.

I am also a parrot owner. I have 2 macaws, 2 eclectus, and a jardines.

My husband grew up working on a chicken ranch with 50,000 chickens. He wasn't very thrilled with the idea, but now that they are here he is realizing they are very different than battery chickens.

Welcome to BYC, glad you decided to join us.

Enjoy your chickens. There are a LOT of knowledgeable people on this website and they share pretty much everything they know about all kinds of things.

HI! and welcome. Where have you been for so long????? This site is a wealth of information, just filter through it and you can learn just about anything. I LOVE refrigerator boxes, for me as well as chickens. I'd save it if possible, just in case you have to go to the feed store or just maybe get a few chicks off of here. It is like a mini coop and if kept dry, it could last through several batches of babies, even a broody hen.......................

One of the biggest joys of having chickens for me is the keeping of them. There is something very satisfying about setting up their coop, brooders and tending to them. As a child I once had a dream of hatching my own chicks by sitting on the eggs in our living room. I was about 8 and the idea would not go away. I wanted my own 'babies', not the mean ole hens in the back yard flock. I never did get to do that of course, but as an adult I did get my very own incubator and have been hatching chicks ever since and 'brooding' over them. Now, HERE, I find there are lots of folks just like me in the world. This forum does move very fast, so if you do post something, it sometimes goes down the pages so fast you may not get an answer, just FYI. I have answered a post and gone to check back, only to find it has moved way down the list, sometimes pages down. I wonder if there is a sticky about that? If it is an emergency, go to that section and someone should answer you. Now, I must get out and clean my own coop, and my brooders and my garage....................it never ends, but at this very moment I hear cheep CHEEP, cheep in my basement from the newest members, Wheaten Marans from 'Bargain' on here, who packs eggs like a pro.
