Newbie & Building My 1st Run

Quote:
Ooooh! You just solved a problem for me! Because my run is wider than the roll of wire I have, I'll have to use multiple, overlapping pieces of wire to fully cover the bottom of the run. I've been trying to figure out how to secure them together without having wires that'll poke the chickens feet. Sheesh, and I use hog rings to hold livestock panels together for my goat pen! Just shoot me now

Don't know if you've decided what primary fencing to use but, you mentioned wanting a 6' clearance. We use 6' 1"x2" welded wire fencing (very large rocks around outside of fencing - keeps the sand from washing out on the downslope, prevents digging). If you are going to use a pop-door for the coop (not completely locked at night), then the hardwire cloth attached to the fencing is a good idea (particularly if your area has weasels or minks). Heavy duty UV resistant cable ties come in handy (easy to alter fencing if the first iteration doesn't suit), electric fencing is also pretty good.

Ivan,
thanks for the rock idea! I think that will work great for us!

I will post pics of the finished product

thanks so much for the help!

I don't think we have weasels or minks. Abington has fisher cats...

Are you in North Weymouth or more near Commercial Street, Kathy?

Just a note, we don't live close to a TSC, but maybe some of the online stores might have it...or one of the Farm Stores, like Ventura in Taunton.

I enclosed all sides and the bottom with hardware cloth. I put down 3-4 inches of sand and it has worked out very well. I wound up roofing my run because it rains constantly here and I had so many eagles, hawks, crows, and vultures roosting in nearby trees and staring down at my chicks.

Tall enough to stand up in is an excellent idea also. You will be glad you have that extra height any time you have to get in there to catch up a hen, or clean.

Sounds like you are putting together a very nice setup.

Thank you so much for all the help. I really appreciate it!!

I am actually right off of commercial st (Idlewell area) on the Fore River.....we are directly across from the Braintree Yaht club. We have Osprey that nest in the high tension wires and a few other birds......long legged ones that stay in the water fishing and then just seagulls but I think covering my run is a great idea, I dont want the chickens stressing by having these birds of prey staring down on them
