Hi there,

The horses we adopted have some cracked hoofs. I was told to apply venice turpentine once a day. I have the VT but there are no directions on it. Ive been applying it nightly, but Im thinking that might be too much. Am I doing this right? LOL Ive searched online about the VT,k but havent had any luck.

Thanks,
Shannon

Actually I have never found anything that really helps hooves that is applied to the hoof. The hoof is a good indicator of the type of feed and hoof care that the horse has received in the past.

A good farrier on a 6 to 8 week schedule, developing a feeding program to meet your horses needs, plus possibly a good hoof supplement (something with biotin) will go a long ways. It will take almost a full year for the hoof to completely grow out.

I've used Horse Guard Biotin (it's in pellet form) for my rope horse who suffered a bad leg injury. It's not cheap but it lasts a long time.
I've also heard that some ferriers can apply a glue of some sort to the wall of the hoof. Ferrier work on a regular basis will be very important, as well as a healthy diet.

I wouldnt be surprised if it was caused by nutiritional issues from thier prior owner. They were both alittle under weight when they arrived. With some good food and love, they are both putting on some good weight. I think that alone will probably help thier hoofs. Since I already have the turpentine, Ill keep applying it.

Thanks
Shannon
