I really don't know what he could be but I'd definitely say he has some sort of retriever in him. He could very well be a lab/golden cross. I can see why you are wondering about the newfie. Probably, though, he would be bigger if he had newfie, but I don't know.
He also looks quite a bit like a Flat-coat, but his hair seems to have more texture and thickness than they (are supposed to) have. I did want to show you this, though...
This picture doesn't show it, but she looks a LOT like your Rider. She is (as we were told) a lab/cocker cross. If I can find a better picture I'll try to show you. She is 75 (should be 70
) lbs. She doesn't have as much fuzzy, crimpy hair as Rider does, I think. Her hair is flatter on her head.
But in that picture of him reaching up for the cat food - her hair grows almost exactly the same way his does. It might be slightly thinner and Rider's looks like it's a bit softer than my dog's.
wordgirl- I could definitely see that being Rider when he is all grown up, she is so cute!
Thanks everyone, you guys have helped me to realize he really isn't a newfie (I really wanted him to be part newfoundland, because they are like big teddy bears) Anyways thanks for your input, I'll post more pics as he gets bigger!
Well Mr.Rider is all grown up.... well almost! He's almost two and has grown quite a bit after his first birthday... and is still growing, he weighs somewhere between 80-90lbs, and is about 24-25 inches tall, his head reaches about 30inches tall when he is standing up straight.... just higher than the kitchen table! I truthfully still think he has newfie in him, he is REALLY large and big boned, and shuffles as he walks. Turns out Rider came with many problems sadly. We believe he was abused, he is terrified of everybody that he doesn't see regularly, and was not well socialized with the "Real" world and other dogs besides ours. And yes we did get him while he was still very young, but the damage had already been done... we have been through training and are continuing to work on it! He is a great house dog, and loves swimming, even on cold days. I just got another puppy ( here's a link to his post https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/665923/oh-puppy-of-mine ) and Rider is super gentle with him, which is almost a problem because Finn loves to maul Rider and Rider won't "put him in his place." Anyways, thought you guys might like an update! Thanks again for your original responses! He's also quite the goofy dog and keeps us all very entertained. He makes up his own little games, and plays them every night. He also has quite the interesting coat. It's kinda of course, and he sheds a ton! My goodness it's crazy!
He's super cute, he might have newf in him...but I find they tend to make a more heavy set dog. We have a lab/nwf cross hes turning 2 in October and he already weighs 130lbs!! He's a big beast with a tiny peanut lab head.
He really does look like a Flat-Coated Retriever. I still think he's a Black Lab/Golden Retriever cross. He's about 5-10 lbs heavier than what a FCR should be. He fits the size and weight of a typical Golden Retriever or Lab.
