How to teach adult chickens to use nipple waterer. New coop with pvc pipe with nipples for watering. I tapped the nipples to show them how to get water; they follow me around and peck at my finger. Tried butter on the triggers, they eat the butter but haven’t figured out the nipple. I have frost free nipples, I’m thinking maybe try standard ones first if they trigger more easily.
Any ideas out there? Thanks.

I'm not sure the difference of frost free as mine I don't think said anything.

We use both verticle (for the chicks) and horizontal for the old ones. Once you get one to use it, the rest will. You might need to take one up to it and make their beak peck it. Usually, all I've done is flicked it to drip some water and walked away. They eventually checked it out and in a day, they all were using them.

I noticed that my regular vs my winter waterer have different nipples. The first is pretty loose while the second requires more pressure, however that could just be from less usage.

Yes! We have two purchased 2-gallon heated water nipple buckets and those are a little different than the 5-gallon DIY nipple bucket, or the various other Tupperware nipple containers we've made.

These are the ones we bought for all of the DYI ones. We put this in the brooder to train chicks to convert from verticle to horizontal. They can do this one when their about 3 weeks old.
