No longer ordering chicks from Stromberg! Rant in post #7!

I found this WONDERFUL hatchery called StrombergsChicks.com where you can order pretty much any breed you want in male, female or straight run! The chick minimum is 25 and we only need 15, so we plan to give the extra 10 Blue Cochin girls to friends and family. We are keeping the 10 California Whites for our ever-growing laying business. They look beautiful and have a fantastic stock and selection of birds! If youre planning to order, go to Stromberg! Any thoughts or suggestions are appriciated!

Oh and I plan to show my Cochins, so lets pray that they will be beautiful!

You are going to simply LOVE California Whites. I have some juvies right now that are 3 1/2 months old. They are flighty but sweet. And so pretty!

They don't pick on the hen I have with one eye or the ones beneath them in the pecking order.

Yay! Theyre so pretty arent they! I don't like flighty birds very much though. I have two extremely flighty leghorns and they run everytime you get within 5 feet of them! I'm really looking forward to their arrival!

Ok, I know this is a complete turnaround, but I STRONGLY DISLIKE STROMBERGS!!! They called last night to say that "We only hatch Cochins in August. Sorry, call us back tomorrow to cancel your order!!!!!" GROWL! DONT order from Strombergs if you want anything but plain old layers!

yeah someone gave me Stromberg's catalog which got me interested in chickens but I emailed them to ask a question about their incubators and they didn't respond..

Strombergs doesn't hatch anything ever. They completely drop ship all of their birds. They haven't hatched anything since the 1970's.

Most of the hatcheries in this country drop-ship from Ideal. If there are not actual, unique pictures of their own stock in their catalog or website, then they are drop-shipping from somewhere. Also the real hatcheries have pictures of their incubators on their sites.

Ideal, McMurray, Mt. Healthy, Cackle, Myers, Meyer, Privett, Eagle Nest hatch most or all of their own chicks. (although the exhibition pictures of poultry on Cackle's website are NOT their birds- they were taken at shows and belong to other people. The non-standard looking birds on Cackle's site are their own stock.

Most of the rest, especially the newer internet-only 'hatcheries' drop-ship from one of the above.

Not that hard to figure out guys and gals! When you buy from any hatchery, you get what you pay for. Production-type birds are going to cost $2-$4 per chick and you can buy them sexed. They will lay plenty of eggs and might somewhat resemble the breed they claim to represent. Thousands of people buy these every year and are completely happy with them.

Exhibition, standard-bred chicks are going to be $6- $10+ per bird and I don't know of any poultry breeders that sell sexed day-olds. Do not expect chickens purchased from hatcheries to look like the drawings represented on their websites!

I fully agree Matt! I think that they should at least update their site to tell you what is available.
