North Carolina

~7 weeks old, a Buff Orpington, a Barred Rock, and an Easter Egger. I was going for non-wacko temperament (especially ability to get along with one another), appearance, and fun-colored eggs. Since I'm aware of chicken math, I'm already thinking of eventually adding a Welsummer and an Olive Egger. (Luckily AVL doesn't allow more than 7 hens within the city limits, which is probably more than my little urban lot needs anyway.) We've been talking about this for years, and decided last fall to do it. There may have been some wine involved. 🥂

I've enjoyed reading your posts!
Thank you!

I considered Welsummers before I got my Sussex.

Are you building your coop or buying one?

For now, we have a large (per them) Nestera. It does have a lot of advantages, especially for us noobies, but it’s pretty weird, too.

So I plan to build one after I get a better feel for chickens. I’d like to do it once and right!

We do have a run framed in, 8x15, and are waiting for FedEx to find the 100’ roll of 1/2” hardware cloth somewhere in their Charlotte warehouse.

Our cat, who met a friend’s hens a few weeks ago and was Seriously Disturbed, inside the shell of the Nestera (she thinks, of course, that it’s hers):

I am so jealous that you have a Nestera! Do let us know how you like it in the long run.

I want one really really bad, more like a toy for me 🤣 .

I’m planning on starting a thread on legit, heavy-duty recycled plastic hen coops like Nestera (meaning henhouses themselves, not the attached runs), with pros and cons - once we get ours set up and the pullets arrive. I need all the feedback and ideas I can get!!
