Hi all... very new to the forums so hoping this is the right place to post something like this. I am preparing to start chickenkeeping next spring. Doing lots of research about coops and disease and predators and such. Recently, I started researching breeds to try to narrow down what I think I might want. I read about the Norwegian Jaehon and it sounds like a winner.
But, reading and reality isn't always the same. So, for those of you who actually keep this breed, what are your thoughts?
They will be in an enclosed run with a predator-proof coop that is roughly large enough for 15 birds (likely this or something like it https://overezchickencoop.com/collections/all/products/large-overez-chicken-coop) within 50 ft of the house on a 12-acre lot that has lots of predators (hawks, eagles, raccoons, coyotes, even a few black bears (do I need to worry about them?)). I want a breed that is easy to handle, is an average egg layer (there are only 2 of us), can handle cold and heat (it was 94 today but we have winter temps in the sub-zeros), and is interesting to interact with. Oh, and my husband is Norwegian.
Does this seem like a good match? What can you tell me about this breed, including where to find it?
