Hi!

Just out with my chickens when I noticed a bulge on my chicken's back. Further inspection under the feathers and I found this clump? Not sure what to make of it. She's letting me touch it and she's not acting out of character. Anyone know what I'm dealing with?

Thanks!

It looks like she has been injured by something, possibly a predator, hawk or possible a rooster with his spur. Has she been picked on? I would separate her and treat her for shock by offering sips of water with electrolytes or 1 tsp of sugar and a small pinch of sugar dissolved in an 8 ounce cup of water. Do you have any chlorhexidene or other first aid antiseptic? I would clean the wound and apply plain Neosporin or Polysporin ointment twice a day. Is there any air under her skin around the wound? When she is out of shock and eating and drinking, I would trim any feathers that are getting into her wound. More pictures of the wound would be welcome.

Hi!

Just out with my chickens when I noticed a bulge on my chicken's back. Further inspection under the feathers and I found this clump? It has a bad smell. Not sure what to make of it. Could be a wound? She's letting me touch it and she's not acting out of character. Anyone know what I'm dealing with? I sprayed it with anti microbial wound spray in the meantime.

thank you! I will see about more pictures. We're about to bring her in for a more thorough clean.

either started bleeding or had never stopped. We held pressure until it stopped and cleaned it. I'm not sure about air but there is something causing it to feel raised. Unfortunately it's already smells which concerns me. Taking her into the vet in the morning just to be on the safe side.
