Hey, y’all,
I have a very faithful 2 and a 1/2 year old RIR. Her name is Hawky.
I call her faithful because she has laid an egg nearly every day of her life, even through her molt.
(You go girl!!!💖)
But Hawky lays strange eggs. I have included a picture below. You will notice that they are abnormally long and oval shaped.

But since the picture above doesn’t do justice for exactly how strangely shaped these eggs really are, there is another photo below of her eggs with normal eggs between them.

I wonder if her oviduct is shaped slenderly, or what would cause them to be this shape???

Thoughts anyone??

I have a girl who does this too. My belief of she is just formed a little more narrow on the inside. We call them bullet eggs 🤣 only downfall is I've never really gotten any of hers to hatch. She sounds like a lovely hen ♥️

Ornithologists have spent some time on the question of why the eggs of different bird species are shaped differently, from essentially round to torpedo-shaped. Possibly it has to do with pelvic bones size and shape, which are in turn influenced by how aerodynamic the hen is. Thus hummingbirds and swallows lay long elliptical eggs. Ostriches' eggs are much more round.

Thank you!!! She’s wonderful!!💜
I love the name “bullet eggs”!
I did successfully hatch 2 of her eggs last year…. They were both boys.😞
