Oldest Hen Age and Breed

Our oldest is 13 years and some change. Her name is Sophia. She was part of the first flock we got when we moved to the state, and there used to be four Golden Sexlinks, named after the Golden Girls. Last year we lost the final member of that flock at 12 years old- our Barred Rock, Butch. Named because she had spurs and a big ole comb and she kind of half crowed but she definitely laid eggs.

I was wondering, for folks in this forum, what the age of the oldest hen you have kept? My oldest hen right now is an eight year old Barred Rock. Sadly, her health is failing and she probably won't make through the weekend. That being said, she has been a great bird since I broought her home as a chick. She was even laying eggs last year. This year, she hasn't been doing very good. But, I consider the birds as much pets as they are farm enimals, I let them live their old age out in my backyard.

My second oldest hen was a Deleware Hen that lived to seven and half years. Sadly, she died last year due to natural causes. The rest of my flock, two Easter Eggers, and a Russian Orloff, are nearing six years old and still lay eggs, though they take a break from October through mid January.

oldest is a 15 year old mutt (probabably a rhode island red) hen who had been living on the side of the road in our neighborhood for who knows how long. Caught her and had her ever since, shes actually very cuddly but has a strong independent rooster-like attitude. she likes helping out mama hens

Wow to have my birds last more then 4 years would be a God send. Victoria and Gloria both Easter Eggs have passed in the last couple of weeks. 3/2025 . This past winter, it got pretty cold for central Florida and I lost Sunny (polish hen ) and Snow a Brahma hen. All about 4 years old. I hope that's it for a while. I don't like losing them.

My oldest is an Arabic local, she’s 9 years old and lays during spring and summer, and she’s a sweetheart! She brooded most of my flock.

Here is a picture of her, she usually runs away, so I didn’t get a good picture of her, when I initially posted.
