Fred is 9 weeks, and he’s actually inside because I’m an idiot. He was hatched by himself, the other 2 eggs weren’t fertile and I just couldn’t throw away an egg with life developing. Anyway he was in his brooder indoors with a constant temp of 75 degrees, we’ve had a horrible heat wave here, temp over 100 degrees and Fred can’t handle the heat. His wattles turn pale, he pants, wings out and doesn’t move. I do take him out in the evenings and put him with littles. Hes scared of every chicken, even Morticia and he’s twice her size. Gomez doesn’t seem to give Fred the time of day, I assume that’s because Fred runs away, it’s clear he’s scared. I have plenty of space, I can definitely expand the yard or make 2 if I have to. I’ve got 3 coops, one main coop it’s huge, and 2 smaller coops. I’ll do whatever I have to. I don’t want bloody battles! Should I think about 2 flocks then? I can definitely do that. I mean, I guess I’d have to get Fred some hens..any suggestions on what I should do?How old is Fred and how old are the pullets?
Where is he at?
He's gonna either challenge Gomez for Alpha status or be content in his position. Have a plan in place if it goes sideways. It may get bloody.
Some keep multiple roos with no problems in one flock. I haven't been there. Hence the reason I have 2 flocks, completely separate and I alternate free range time. An extra coop and run is always a bonu to have in case you need to isolate.
I have 3 coops and 5 runs at the moment. I can put any group, or broodys with new babies or separate my cockerel grow-outs at will.
Super handy for all these eggs I'm hatching this year.![]()
