ugh! This has been a few weeks from hell! If it isnt one thing then its another. Looking over my silkie chicks this morning, I noticed one of my males had a grayish film over his left eye. I didnt notice it yesterday, but i feel bad bc i also didnt look when i normally do. Ive added pictures trying tk show what I mean. Is he blind? Did he maybe get pecked? Something contagious? Otherwise he seems fine. Eating/drinking/very skittish when being picked up Please help

How old is your chick?

It may be going blind, but sadly there might be a possibility that it has Ocular Marek's but there is no way to know for sure unless you lose him and you have further testing.

@Eggcessive may also want to chime in, she's more knowledgeable about eyes than I am.

He was born May 20.. oh gosh. Mareks is one of my biggest fears. :/ i was hoping maybe there was just something that got into his eye.. crap

:hugs

Have you tried flushing the eye with saline and looking to see if there is something in it?
It can be a number of things, so I would not get too caught up about Marek's just yet.

The second picture shows a cloudy left pupil that looks like a cataract to me. The iris color looks identical to the right eye color, but the right pupil is clear. There may have been a scratch or infection, and cataracts can result from a viatmin D or A deficiency or past exposure to AE virus. Keep watch on it for any changes in the pupil shape or iris color. If you have a vet they might want you to use an antibiotic drop or ointment in the eye in case of infection.

I havent tried saline yet, but will do that.

I dont have any avian/chicken vets near me, but petco now has vet prescription over the counter meds- is there maybe something i can get from there? I have nutridrench, rooster booster vitamin & electrolytes, and polyvisol.. is there anyway to reverse it or is he now just blind?

I would saline wash it, and then see what happens.. so sorry:hugs I know how you feel feel, I had a big Marecks scare, but my hen has recovered! Btw, I need to write an article on that amazing story!

That is unknown, and the reason for the vet recommendation. Most of us can get Terramycin eye ointment in feed stores (ask a clerk for it,) and plain Triple Antibiotic Ointment can sometimes be used in the eye twice a day. If you can possibly find ciprofloxacin eye drops, which are prescription only, those would be the best treatment. Some prescription eye drops and ointments also contain dexamethazone for inflammation.
