Ok, I've been saying all this time that my husband is the one that started this whole thing right?? Well, I think the chicken craziness has rubbed off on the WHOLE family

I did buy the incubator (saying no eggs till next year....) ok you probably can guess that didnt work out. We now have a full bator (actually plus two that are next to the turner that we turn by hand) We ordered the eggs at the same time (from three different people) and they didnt arrive at the same time even though they were shipped fairly close. So we have 18 bbs orpington eggs (my pick) due march 2, 8 salmon faverolles (husbands pick) due march 5, and 17 assorted silkie bantams for my son. He ordered silkies from McMurray but they didnt send any due to fertility issues I guess.

I am totally new to the incubating thing. The kids built a candler for a science project but since this is a light bulb attached to a board with a coffee can over it, I'm having a hard time seeing stuff in my orpington eggs. For the first 4 days all I could see was that most of the eggs looked half dark. In the wee hours, early this morning, I candled them again and saw that alot of them were starting to show veining and in 4 I could see little swimmers!!

I was SOO excited!

The planning stage on our coop that we are doing is finally all done. Plans are drawn up and now its time to start getting supplies. We were lucky enough to find on craigs list 4 large storm windows and only paid $15 for all of them. Gotta love when you find a good deal!

Things are going really good with the two brooders. We have the EE's in the bantam tub, which works out really good since they are calm. The other tub has the standard chicks. Everyone is growing really good and getting wing feathers. A few have tail feathers. We've had lot of family come over to see the new babies, and everyone has really enjoyed seeing the babies and can't wait for all the eggs! We have 10 laying hens now so with all our family, we kind of spread out the eggs between them all.

We're not having any trouble keeping up with the dust so far and the little peeps are so cute, we don't mind that either. We were hoping to start clearing out the coop this weekend, but my son and I caught a cold and weren't up to starting that project yet. We're doing better now so definitely this weekend starts the coop "reconstruction." I'm so excited to get started so I can share pics with all of you.

Any advice on hatching eggs??

Eggs from my chickens. Here what I got in there... 4 Bantam, 4 EE, 2 RIR and the rest are Buff Orpingtons eggs... my roosters are an OEGB and 2 BO's (usually my BO roosters only let my OEGB rooster mate the 2 other bantams and the EE we have, so I'm excited to see what we get out of this bunch)

I'm so glad I found this thread! You showed me a picture of Bob in my thread, but I had no idea that there was more Bob out there!! Bob laying on his back getting a belly rub and falling to sleep is one of the funniest things I have ever seen!

I need more Bob!!

How often do you candle your eggs? Is it bad to do it more often?? After I saw the little swimming ones last night, I'm fighting to keep checking on them. I really want to look again tonight, but my husband says I should leave them alone. Can you hurt them by candling them everyday?
