Hi all,

Just a few observations I've been thinking about and thought I'd share with you experts since I'm new to all of this.

My peahen has her warning honk and a lovely 'coo' she makes when she is really happy. She clucks when she's nervous.

My peacock has a number of calls. The nighttime call, sounds like the loud meow, the warning honk and yell, the mating triple high honk while he's doing his dance, and the one that is interesting to me is when he chases my chickens into their hiding places (from him as he's gotten territorial with mating season) he then does this kind of sad/forlorn call. I'm wondering if he's happy he's 'herded' them into one place, or if he's sad they aren't his friends.

His behavior is also changing since the peahen is on her nest now. When she's on her nest, he seems lonely and more like his old self with the chickens, hanging around, letting them just be... when she comes off that nest, watch out chickens, they hightail it as he gets territorial with her and wants all the food for the two of them.

What have you guys observed with your pea's behaviors?? I'm really interested. They are fascinating.

Thanks!

Heidi

5 Months ago I bought a black male and a White male- they are still a little skiddish around me and just started to "honk"

Yes, males and hens has unique sounds and calls. Many of my hens also coo if I stop and talk to them when they are sitting on their perches. The males during breeding season each uses diffrent calls for diffrent reasons as well. I collect eggs normally at or just after dark and the males makes kind of a "hello" siren shriek when they see my flashlight coming. This alerts everyone else of whats coming. Hens makes diffrent sounds when being pursued by males, especially if they want to get away. Or their clucking as they are walking around just before laying an egg.

It is always funny when my peahens make an impatient trilling noise when I do not hand them pieces of bread or other treats fast enough. My pied peahen Damsel especially loves making these impatient noises and she will stare at me making that noise as if demanding that I hand her a treat next.

When I first got peafowl I was amazed at all the different noises they make. I guess I didn't think about them making other noises except for the loud "Ahhh ahhhh" call the male makes that everyone knows about.

I think you may have just answered a question I have...Does just the male make the very very loud calls...Think we may have a Peahen that just showed up a few weeks ago. She has not been very loud...sounds more like our chickens so guessing it's a hen or a juvenile...Guess time will tell if a long tail appears...

My male called even when he was just one, this year was a bit worse since he is now 3 and mature, and has a peahen. Usually at dawn, and as a guard/sentry call. The honking seems to be more out of fear... just my observations...
