We got a 5 yr. old peacock (ended up being very aggressive) about a few weeks ago. We had him pened up in the barn so our 4 hens could see him. My FIL decided to let him out after about a week (he does know they should be pened up for 2 months). He stayed around just fine and was strutting around in the barn for the hens. Well we were gone most of the day Saturday for my FIL's 60th B-Day party. We had some cousins (12-14 yr. olds) going to spend the night. They ended up over here somehow from the party without telling us and some other cousins came over. We told them at the party we had a peacock that is aggressive and not to go near him. We ended up back here with 6 kids running around outside and no peacock insight. One of the kids said he seen the dog chase the peacock off around to the side of the barn. The dog (pekingese) does chase cats and other animals but doesn't bite them. We don't know if he took off cause of the dog or the kids cause I know he isn't afraid of horses cause he was walking around beside them one day with them trying to kick him. He had been free ranging for a little over a week. We checked all over around the barn, in the trees around here, and didn't see him. Sunday the hens kept calling for him but we didn't hear him. The closest trees that aren't in our yard are about 1/4-1/2 mile from here across the cow pastures. We wouldn't think of him going that far cause of the hens. We are going to start asking people if they seen him around. It was night time when he took off so we thought he went around the barn and roosted up in one of the areas on the back of the barn or went down into the barn. I know the dog doesn't chase animals to far. She usually stops running at something after 15 feet. I didn't think he would be afraid of her cause he wasn't afraid of a fourwheeler coming towards him when someone was pulling into the barn driveway. That's why we are wondering if it was all the kids. They probably wouldn't tell us if they chased after him and he ran off. My husband was actually glad to see him go cause of him being aggressive. Is there any tips for finding him or trying to get his attention to come back? Also we were wondering if he bred the hens how long the sperm would last in them? They were up near some nests we made for them today. Not sure if they started laying. Two of them laid last year but we didn't have a male.

my neighbor also got a peacock, a male, and then my he and my DH went and got a hen and he kept her locked up for a month, and the minute he let them out, the hen flew off and he hasn't seen her since.

The peahens calling may help bring him back..if at dusk he would try and find a high roost. 1/4 mile not that far if he was ran off...Check with anyone with chicken ,guinea and etc. He will seak out other birds. Peahens can stay fertile upto 3 week after mating. I got fetile eggs from a peahen 21/2 weeks after the peacock was removed.

My peacock never came back. The hens still call for him though. A couple days ago I heard one of the hens making noises that sounded different so I went to see if it was the male. Well when I got into the barn 2 hens were on a beam up high in the barn and I seen something move. I thought it was a cat and it turned out to be a raccoon trying to get one of them. I've seen raccoons before at my dad's house but didn't realize how good they could climb hanging sideways along a beam 20 feet up. I had to get my husband to get rid of it cause I didn't want it to get any of my animals and the peahens seem interested in some nests. Also we have little kids that go up into the barn and you never know if an animal will attack or have rabies. I like raccoons and find them very smart but I don't want them near my animals. Lost to many chickens and a almost full grown turkey to a family of foxes last year and I seen one of the foxes this year cause we didn't have anything to catch them with.

Best of luck... Ive had my peafowl for about 1 to 1/5 years... They ahve been loose since about 4 to 5 months old... Never had any problems... and then last week... my peafowl decided to go grazing in the Corn Field... and it all looks the same to them... so they went to the neighbors... cops showed up and everything... we walked them back home and that was that... then later that evening... they disseapeard... Could not find them... heard them calling from the feild next door... but was to dark to do anything in the middle of a corn feild..> I had to wait until the next day at 5 am... thats when I heard them... calling for each other... all 11 of them were in different parts of the corn field and some even at 3 different houses... as if they were chased by a dog...

But they eventually came home... they got lost in the corn... that pesky corn... So... Needless to say... they are no longer free range... They are in a temp pen... and were currently making idividual breeding pens for all the different breeds of peafowl I have... but plan on leaving the 2 IB males out... Im gonna focus on using my black shouler male to breed my IB females...

That would be a mess having to walk that many back and find them all. We have noticed the past few days that some of the hens are coming out of the barn to graze with the others. Well today my FIL found a nest of 6 eggs and seen another hen laying in a nest but she doesn't have any eggs yet or maybe that raccoon ate them. She was using a nest we built for her up on some metal cabinets so hopefully a raccoon can't climb up them.

Glad you got them all back, mine generally stay in the yard but when they like to take a hike, usually the morning after I forget to pen them at night, its like a game trying to get them back, as soon as one starts heading the right direction it changes its mind and runs even further away from the house, luckily they have always ended up back at home on their own usually after a few hours.

This is the 1st year we had corn planted in the feild... normally its cabbage or small produce so the peafowl never get lost..

Heres a map of my house and where they were over night.. mega lost...

Great map visual!! You got your exercise that day I'm sure. And I bet those birds knew exactly where the others were during the whole time through calling, etc. I saw a dead peahen on the side of the road today, couldn't believe it! I went back and made sure there were no babies around as it looked like she had just been hit...so sad!

What alot of people don't know, if someone hits your birds or run off the road to keep from hitting them. They can come after you for all the damage....

So a bad idea to free range if near a road...
