Hi all!
I'm from Hungary and I'm looking for other European members of the 'Flock' :)
Here there's not a lot of purebred chickens, everyone want everything to be cheap, so I wanted to see how other countries are doing and probably at the end maybe buy some hatching eggs if the needs meet :)
Breeds I'm looking for currently
BC Marans with really dark eggs
Lavender Marans
Speckled Sussex
Bresse
Thank you!

welcome!

it is interesting you cannot find pure breeds in hungary. many greek breeders got their parent stock from some exhibitions in hungary. you can try https://www.olx.ro/ (romania). I use google translate.

Welcome, in my country some people have chickens purely for eggs (laying hybrids) and some have them like having pets or a hobby. The people who have chickens as a hobby like to buy and breed for standard breeds for perfection or just like to incubate or let them sit on eggs once a year and have barnyard mixes.

If I like to buy a certain breed its not very difficult to obtain hatchery eggs , chicks or chickens unless it’s a rare breed where I live.

I contacted a breeding club a few times and looked on marketplace (Craigslist list) to buy eggs. I always have a few breeds I like to buy to increase my chances to find what I like.

If you cant find the chickens you want in Hungary maybe you can buy the breeds you want abroad. Like @Maiahr who lives in Bulgaria. Two years ago she had an acquaintance who drives a lorry 🚛 and this person took hatchery eggs from the Netherlands to Bulgaria.

I have a Lavender Marans and had a Speckled sussex and a marans. The eggs or chicks are available here in France, but very much depends on the people you have around you (who lays pretty dark bless her) . Have you tried on your local online sales sites? That is where I have found amateur breeders here.
My Plums are flowering, but sadly have had to endure frost and hail these last days...
I have not had fruits on them for several years now...!!
Oh that is sad! Mine are looking good and I think we are safe from frosts now (touch wood!). Our figs are also coming on (I'm sure way earlier than normal!). Last year they also suffered with the late frost.
I have moved here when I was a teenager, but I'm originally from the South - where 38°C/40°C in the shade is (or was when I was a kid, at least) the norm most of Spring and Summer...
We lived in the Aude for almost a decade and it was like that. Saying that here in Dordogne it has been more and more like that over the last 10 years!

Hi!
Yes I'm absolutely over the local "breeders". I got the darkest eggs from a slovakian-hungarian breeder, will put them to the incubator tomorrow. But they are still far lighter than what I see on lot of places....

Hi all! After a disturbingly (for first half of April) hot week or 2 it has turned again! I got out in the garden this morning before my shirt got too wet! The girls loved all the weeds / aphid covered kale etc!
But they are still far lighter than what I see on lot of places....
Honestly they look pretty good, particularly the bottom left and top right. You must take pictures with a pinch of salt as they may have been filtered, different light, different cameras etc. Also hens lay different darkness depending on thier age / the time of year etc.
Yesterday my daughter send me some disturbing news about the forever chemicals PFAS / PFOS in chicken eggs
They are so concerning! They are even in breast milk now.

Have a great weekend everyone!
