Hey all -

I picked up a Swedish Flower hen that has an old, unknown injury. She has a penguin stance and limps. She will take a few steps and then lay down while extending her left wing on the way down to use as a brace to keep from just falling. She is NOT egg bound - apparently she's been like this for a while, but the other chickens in her flock finally decided to give her the boot about a week ago.

I was asked to take her in and try and rehab her. Just looking for ideas and suggestions. Right now I'm giving her half a baby aspirin 2x/day and doing some water therapy with her for about 5-10 min every other day. I also have a heating pad in her enclosure that she can lay on if she wants to. She has already shown some improvement in mobility in the few days I've had her. When she's in the water she will "walk" with a normal range of motion and doesn't have the penguin stance, but can only do this for a minute or two, max.

Anything else I should add in to the routine?

How old is she? Do you have other chickens? Did she come from a flock with a rooster who may have hurt her? Is her tail up or down? Does she lay eggs? I would be careful to keep her in quarantine for at least a month in case she could be sick. Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease?

Roughly 2 years old. I was told the roosters did beat her up once she started showing she was having trouble walking. Her tail stays down. She has laid eggs in the past but hasn't laid for a few months. I do not believe she was vaccinated for Mareks.

I have other chickens but she has her own place in the house completely separate from my flock. Her poops are normal, comb is red, eats and drinks just fine.

Hopefully it is just an injury or possibly a reproductive disorder such as salpingitis that have affected her walking. Mareks usually strikes earlier in life, and is contagious to other birds, spreading through the feather dander. It would not hurt to give her some human vitamin B or super B complex 1/2 tablet daily crushed into her food or some egg. It is around 8 dollars at Walmart in the Spring Valley brand.
