Hi, all,
I am having trouble with carpenter ants in my coop. Tomorrow I am going to spray the storage part of my coop with permethrin. My coop is a 10 x 10’ shed that we converted into the coop. My wonderful husband partitioned it off, so my girls get a 10 x 7 space for them and I get the rest for storage. My girls will be outside in the run While I spray. Here’s my question: I have two that have recently started laying (yay!) and they are usually done by 11:00am. Is it ok to spray the storage side with permethrin while they are nesting on the other side of the coop in their nesting boxes? Thanks!

Yes, that's fine. You can spray the coop too. Permethrin is a commonly used treatment for poultry lice and mites.

as @DobieLover said above, YES its safe - as long as you don't have cats rubbing themselves up against the side of your chicken coop, and the run off is unlikely to find its way to a koi pond or other small water source with fish. Also, don't place the NUC box for your bees right next to it...

Apart from those simple precautions, go ahead and spray.

I use permethrin in my coop, just remove eggs first obviously and I don't spray on top of bedding I completely spray coop THEN add shavings

Keep in mind that using any insecticide(like permethrin) as a preventative(before you're sure there are insects that need killing) can backfire as it can cause resistance and won't work when you do need it.

I am only using to kill my mites/lice that I know I have. Not as a prevention
Yes, you do, and I am curious how it works out for those ants.
I was responding to the post I quoted ;)
It does kill ants, I had ants in a coop I wasn't using and I sprayed them and they died immediately
