Hi all,
I want to introduce the project I’ve been working on! My Pet Chicken Project!
I love my chickens and while there’s certain breeds I gravitate towards I noticed that they all carry varying health issues, ornaments (huge combs, too intensely feathered feet, too high egg production etc). I mainly keep chickens as companions and am not interested in high laying or meat capacity.
I want:
-a large chicken that is still able to fly
-a good free ranger
-lives to old age
-lays infrequently enough to not cause health issues (2-3 eggs per week during high season max)
-is healthy
-and most importantly easy to handle and friendly towards humans and other birds
I started breeding my birds and retained the friendliest and healthiest and mated them with the friendliest and healthy Roos. I mixed all kinds of breeds: Brahma, Orpington, Easter Eggers, Marans, Wyandottes etc to create as much of an outbred population as possible. I’m no raising my F2 chicks and am so proud of how friendly those little birds are already! There’s a long way to go but I’m excited for the journey!
