I got a couple ringneck chicks from the feed store. I’m raising them with a batch of chickens the same age so they are used to them around breeding time.
I found a guy with all sorts of pheasants but he refused to sell me chicks. He has Goldens, Mutants, Mongolians, Swinhoes, Silvers, and a beautiful mix of the Silver and Mutant. Do you think any of those would breed chickens if I got them as adults? Would they be more likely if I got them as juveniles?

How is that even possible??? What's the best chicken to breed to a pheasant? My grandparents have two pheasants...
It’s funny to me it seems more birds bend the rules about inter genus hybrids than those that actually follow them. Pheasants and chickens are pretty notorious for this. They are close enough related to hybridize but the hybrids usually turn out sterile.
We hope to find out which pheasant species is more likely to have fertile offspring with chickens. I assume that chicken varieties from SE Asia would be more compatible, but it may not matter. I am trying to get a couple species of jungle fowl to see if they are more compatible than North American chickens.

If you can only get adult pheasants I would get hens and then find a rooster that would be willing to breed them. Or if you have a tame enough rooster you can just hold the pheasant while he breeds.
