Neighbor’s cat, Hank, likes to hang out with the chickens. I think he made Ravioli mad yesterday, though when he tried to see what she was eating. She started squawking at him!

When my cat gets too close to Ruby, she will run at him and attack. She does the same thing with my dog. Good thing neither of them care. She is the only chicken I have that is brave enough to attack a cat. The other chickens just do the cat warning and back away.

Oh wow! Ruby is cute and brave Hank loves coming over and lounging around with the ladies. And I love it because I fully believe he would fight off any hawk that tried to attack. He’s a great guy! Hank is definitely a friend in our book, unless he wants Ravioli’s apple that she worked really hard to pluck from the apple tree, that is

That is nice! I originally read Hank's name as Hawk in your post of him, how ironic.

I believe Ruby is just trying to protect me. She loves me and I know she is wary of the cat and dogs and probably sees them as a threat to me. Ruby's son, Odie, also loves me and will protect me, but he does not actually attack other animals. Despite acting as if he is the strongest thing in the world, Odie has an intense fear of mushrooms. He freaks out if he sees mushrooms, living or dead.

I would trust cats ~ even the loose ferals around my hens before any dog (& I love dogs). I have a respect for dogs' possible sudden boisterousness where they possibly think a mad hen is great fun to engage with. I've seen cats smart enough to back off from a mad hen rather than engage in battle.
