Hi everyone
My name is Becca, one of my Bluebell chickens (she’s about a year and a half old) has something very wrong with her eye. It was not like this when she went to bed last night.
When I let all the chickens out this morning from their 45’ x 16’ 12’ run to free range, I saw this. She has her head tucked down into her body, and now does not want to eat. She’s very friendly, but usually does not like to be touched. I can pick her up with no problem right now.
Her eye is very swollen and sealed shut, but in the sunlight, I could see her eyeball moving underneath her lid. My fiancé opened her eye gently, & he said it was “gooey”. I can’t get her to let me open it again, mostly bc I don’t want to cause her more pain. There is no discharge or pus as of now, just shut and swollen.
I have had chickens with a swollen eye before, likely from another pecking them, but it has always going down by the end of the day, and just puffy- not sealed. Hers is the same, if not worse than earlier.
So for my arsenal; (their First Aid kit I actually made according to an article I read on this site a year or so ago ❤️)
I have (that I think may help?)
*Vetricyn spray (& some other medicated sprays/ ointments/ solutions, but this is the only one that doesn’t have an eye “warning”),
*Sterile Saline Eye Wash with a cupped end, and just purchased
*Terramycin eye ointment
If anyone has tips how I should clean it, how to triage her, help her feel better- what to do 😓 PLEASE, let me know your thoughts.
Since I didn’t actually see her get pecked in the eye I can’t be completely sure, but think (but by no means am I an Aviary expert- nor doc) that if it was an infection I would have noticed something last night & it wouldn’t appear so dry (as opposed to having anything leaking out of it)
So far have cleaned it w/ warm water & a baby towel then gently put a good gob of the Terramycin ointment over the area.
I am blessed with a place to keep her apart from the others; she’s staying in her own little chicken coop inside of the run, so she’s separated from the rest of the flock, with fresh water & food (though she’s not touching it now. Only got her to eat a few dried mealworms- & usually she goes crazy for them, but not so much today).
I’m desperate to help her; any advice will be IMMENSELY appreciated.
I can’t stand to see her in pain, I feel so helpless 😞

Thank you in advance,

~Becca & Little Falcon (my injured feathered friend)

~Ones of her whole body were from mid morning today when all the chickens came out of the run (as are any that have her whole body) around 11am

~One photo close- up of her face/ in his arms is @ 7pm tonight, after cleaning her gently with warm water/ before applying the Terramycin.]

Thanks again 🙏

Sounds like you have all the right solutions to treat the eye.
Do your best to get the eye open, rinse well with saline, press out any pus, then apply the Terramycin in the eye.
If you need to, wrap/swaddle her in towel to help capture her wings so you have more control during treatment.

Her stance is concerning. Look her over for lice/mites, see that her crop is emptying.
When did she last lay an egg?

We didn’t see her lay yesterday or today.
I was hoping the eye opened a little today, but unfortunately it hasn’t.
I will look her over well for any mites or lice, & check her crop as well- thank you, I hadn’t thought of doing either of those things.
Would you use saline solution to clean out her eye or warm water?
Thank you so much for responding,
~Becca

It has worked for me to use just regular polysporin drops that you buy at the store, just add one drop to her eye once a day if you can get it open.
