Hi all!

Disclaimer:
This is not an advertisement😆 I just really like this brand of feed. It has really worked for me and my chickens love it.

I've seen a lot of threads and posts saying that their hens are laying hardly any eggs.
I want to share with you what chicken feed I get MY chickens. It's literally a miracle-worker. I swear by it. When I switched over to this brand I saw a noticeable difference.
It's called Kalmbach feeds. They sell feed for many types of farm animals.
From my 11 free-range hens I have gotten maybe 120+ eggs from them so far this year. It's not only the feed that helps them lay more eggs, it's other factors as well. Mine are let out every morning and go to bed by themselves every night. I feed them table scraps, such as fruits and veggies every now-and-then, but no human junk food. I also feed them whole eggs (yes I get PLENTY extra.) They eat the innards as well as the shells which are a fantastic source of calcium (especially if your chickens are picky like mine and won't eat crushed oyster shells🙄)
If your hens are barely laying any eggs, or if they are pullets and are taking a while to lay their first egg, then please try this brand out.
In my area, 20 pound bags are $16.49, and 50 pound bags are $20 to $25 depending on what type it is. They have this type of feed called "Henhouse Reserve" made with all natural ingredients such as whole grains, seeds, and veggies (and other stuff as well.) But I find that my chickens pick through it to get to their favorite parts. They act like such spoiled little brats sometimes😆

Anyway, give this a try. I don't think they carry it at Tractor Supply, but you can get it online and I think Walmart may have it as well!
Thank you so much! Going to look for it today. My tip I just learned of was to feed cat kibble. They said it upped his egg production 50%! So I bought some today on Amazon called Tiki Cat Born Carnivore. 43% protein.

The extra protein is good but be careful about feeding too much cat food as it does have quite a bit of fat which isn't good for them. I treat it as any other treat and only give it sparingly every now and then

It's better to feed them a higher protein chicken feed to begin with than to supplement

I feed either purina flockraiser or nutrena all flock whichever I can find fresh and I do keep up with egg count daily and I have gotten 2,355 eggs from Jan 1 2024 til today from 17 four year old girls, 3 two year old girls, and 6 1 year old girls. That’s a lot of eggs to eat and give away🤣

I'm about to get started with chickens - finally moving to a place where zoning doesn't prohibit them. Don't have experience feeding chickens however I currently have and have had for the past 50 years a large colony of meat rabbits and Kalmbach has become my feed of choice. The litter sizes are bigger, their birth size is bigger and the butcher weight occurs on average 2 weeks earlier. Once I get my chickens which will be soon, I will definitely use it for them as well.

Welcome!
I don't think you'll be disappointed by their chicken feed. I switched to their flock maker a few months ago and my girls' feathers are so soft! Eggs shells are solid (I provide oyster shell on the side) and the eggs themselves are flavorful

That's so cool!!
I find it amazing that your rabbits became happier and healthier when you switched to Kalmbach.
Enjoy your chickens! What breeds are you getting?

Kalmbach is good feed, it has a large group of adherents here on BYC reporting good performance, its numbers are good from a theory perspective (in terms of guaranteed nutrition label) and there are rarely reports of problems of freshness thru its distribution partners.

It is outside of a number of BYCer's price range, or impractical for other reasons, but its certainly not the most expensive product out there.

Most Kalmbach -related complaints involve their whole grain feeds and are identical to other whole grain feeds in that respect, selective consumption by dominant birds - easily remedied by soaking or fermenting.

I don't use the product myself, but if It was available fresh off the shelf at comparable price to my current feed, i would happily use it.

/edit and it seems I've said much the same, previously, in this thread. Carry on and ignore the above if its your second time reading it, sorry!

I'm sure that if my chickens weren't such spoiled brats they wouldn't pick through the whole grain hen house reserve stuff 😆 😅
