I had a question for you. If the wryneck is a vitamin deficiency issue, how can I avoid this in the future? She gets chick feed for the protein. She is kept separate from the flock because they pick on her, so she free ranges/forages more often. Is there an issue with her diet you can see? Or some other source of the deficiency?

Most times a vitamin deficiency is more likely with stale or old feed, feeding an unbalanced diet, or in chicks with poor nutrition of the parent stock. That said, we usually recommend the vitamin E and thiamine anyway. If she is getting a balanced chick or all flock feed, that is fine.

Update:

She seems to be improving. She is spending more time upright and has a great appetite. I gave her another round of the vitamins E and B, and her mash is wetted with water to help with her hydration; I haven’t seen her drink from her waterer, but I have been syringing water into her. We are feeling optimistic about her recovery!

That sounds great. Is her neck still twisted? I kept a hen alive and healthy for 5 weeks once with wet chicken feed and egg. She refused to drink, but would eat moistened food and vitamins. She could not balance and walk to a waterer, but one day got up and recovered. So moistened feed, egg, canned cat food, etc work well.

Yeah it’s still twisted. She has a tilt when she’s upright and I saw her upside down once this morning, but she does seem to spend more time upright which is encouraging. I’ll keep giving her that hydration until she can drink by herself!

A final update:

She’s upright, AND she’s drinking and eating by herself!

She’s definitely on the mend, thank goodness. She has a good appetite, drank water by herself, and walks around normally with just a tiny tilt.

My plan is to continue the vitamins for another few days to make sure she’s built up her stores. But can they just be in her feed, or should I continue to syringe them to her?
