hello there,

I am new to the website and am looking for advice. I am completely new to breeding as it wasnt my intention. I took in a pregnant potbelly and before i could even get her in a situated area she was popping out piglets left and right.

so what i do know: her farrowing section is warm and has heat lamps on one side so she can adjust as much as she wants. she has peace and quiet most of the day and no other animals can get to her and her babies. she has hay, shavings, feed and water. she is nursing well.

she had 1 stillbirth that was left in the placenta and i removed it from her area right away because i atleast think that was the right thing to do. She had 8 more that were nursing fine. Later yesterday evening i noticed that one was kinda pushed to the corner not doing well so i immediately took it tried to keep it warm and bottle feed using milk replacer.

again dont know if that was the right thing to do.

needless to say the baby did not survive.

now there is 7 and three are fat and seem to be hogging the good teats and i do not want to lose anymore to malnourishment.

does anyone have any advice on what i can do here?

Do you have pictures of them. I love piglets!!

Yes I do. They are now 5 days old. I was so worried I took them to the vet at 3 days old and the vet was having fun taking Christmas pictures with them

Can you try to get the ones who aren’t nursing as well latched onto a better teet, a lower area...it might just take time of you rearranging them a bit. I have 2 pot belly pigs...but many mal ic castrated...unfortunately. Are you going to sell them in pairs? Where are you?

Well I am in SE Texas for starters. I took mama piggie in from some backyard breeders. I plan on keeping one and selling the rest.

By selling, I mean honestly. They are potbellies. Not minis. If they wind up small well it’s def a mystery to me. & momma is pretty much made her point not to touch her babies. So basically I do try to bottle feed in the AM and PM hours while momma is eating. But they are 5 days right now. At about 14 days I plan on handling them much more to get used to people and being held. But for now I feel like I should respect mama and I sincerely care about their health and growth.

Sounds good. Is she a good pet normally..or you don’t know yet since she just came to you? Ours were from a bad farmer and neglected. It took some time to get them used to people. But now my one, Portly, follows me all the time. Jumbo is more laid back, but I think it’s mostly due to his size. They we’re obese when we got the, and put them on an diet. Now Portly’s arthritis isn’t bad at all and she’s spunky and Jumbo is better as well. So, hopefully after you are able to give them all some TLC you will get to see the great part of pot bellies...they are soo funny! Please continue the great work with the piggies and keep posting pictures!

Unfortunately momma and piggy daddy have not warmed upto me. Piglets are doing great. But I only got momma to the point of letting me pet her when I give her treats. But that was only one day. And then 20 mins later she ran right thru my legs and wheel barrel as I was shoveling a pile in the barn.

Feels a little like we took 2 steps forward and 5 steps back because after chasing her around to get her back in the barn we are now on a grunt at me basis.

Baby steps. Either way she will earn her keep by tilling up all the roots for my flower beds lol. I wish she would let me pet her because she could really use some eye cleaning and coconut oil on her dry skin
