I've been getting into raising rarer breeds of chickens/poultry, so I'm looking for breeding pen/coop ideas. I have lots of groups/pairs I would like to keep separate so I was wondering if anyone had any info/ideas to help me out. I found a few double decker cage ideas online, which seem very space efficient.

We just ordered a 12x20' Amish shed to be our breeding coop and 4 runs of 5'x12 foot. They're for my mottled, buff, and cuckoo silkie roosters and hens.

We had looked at cages/pens but didn't have a coop big enough to do that plus, they'd be happier and more productive with more room, so we splurged.

I know a game rooster breeder who has something like a run that he keeps a couple chickens he wants to specifically breed in. It is partially covered with sokid roofing to act somewhat like a coop, but the rest just has chain for the top. Size really depends on how many chickens in each section and what kind.

I was keen to have the flexibility of separate cages for bachelors, breeding, brooding, isolation. I have a project underway to construct a 14' x 16' pole shed to house the cages but my cockerels grew up faster than I could build.

I did some searching and found a set of cages for $200 (the sale included 3 large waterers that cost about $75 each so it turned out to be a very good deal).

The cage is two levels 3 separate cages (easily converted to 4); 10' long 3' by 3' height & width. Mounted on legs so I do not have to bend over. Only after I had it did I discover how easy it is to replenish food and water. This could be replicated for a few hundred $.
