Praise the Lord, our baby ducky hatched and is doing well!!! She (he) is in her brooder as of just now, and she is jumping way higher than we thought baby duckies could jump! Do y’all know if this is typical baby ducky behavior? She hatched alone, and we have a stuffed duck in there with her right now. We have adult ducks, but at the moment she is in there by herself.

How high are we talking? Can you show us what the brooder looks like?
You can hardly see Miracle (the baby ducky) because she’s black against a black box!!! 😂 This picture doesn’t really make the height look right... it’s a 27 gallon container!

*the picture was edited to take out the red color from the heating lamp!

I have brooded ducklings a few times and never saw them jump like that. But I never had one alone. I'm guessing that's why this one is so active. Do you have other eggs hatching?
There were other eggs in the incubator (only 3 others...) and she is the only one who hatched. She really is “Miracle” because the incubator got unplugged, etc! Praise The Lord, we’re blessed that she hatched! So she is alone for right now... that’s why we put the stuffed duck in there. I think you’re right though, my Momma has her on her chest with a heating pad right now, and she’s being very quiet and even going to sleep!

Are you going to get Miracle any other friends? They do much better with a companion, congrats on your baby!
The on thing I would change about that setup is having a waterer deep enough to duck her head in. Ducks need water deep enough to dunk their heads so they can clear their nares. A thin RubberMaid tupplemware works well. Cut a few holes in the lid. It keeps them from being able to swim in it.

I have a muscovy that jumped as a small duckling -- I was totally taken by surprise and had to get a new brooder as a result. My muscovy even used his water tub as a step up before jumping -- he knew exactly what he was doing as I moved the water tub [a heavy duty earthenware dog bowl, and he moved over with it and started jumping off the bowl in its new position.

I had to get a deeper brooder and fashion a lid out of chicken wire over the new brooder in case he quickly found he could jump there too!

I’ve had good success with several single ducklings due to circumstances out of my control. They bond tightly to you and boy O boy they get upset at times when they can’t see you. Ultimately I’ve felt they needed to be ducks in the company of other ducks. When mature enough I integrated them very slowly and carefull. It’s heartbreaking when they don’t love you anymore and want to be with the flock so be prepared to loose that bond.
