Hi to all, I am 14 weeks pregnant (almost 15 weeks) and i just cant resist a soft boiled egg or soft poached egg in the morning................surely our 'home grown' eggs dont have the same salmonella risks as store bought eggs?
I mean seriously an egg laid that morning, you cant get fresher so is there any real harm in it?
Opinions please!

Yeah thats what i figured, i know my girls are clean and well looked after, what they are fed and that they have no diseases. I spoke to my midwife about it and amazingly she had no idea of the difference :|

hi! I am a retired midwife and I would have told any of my Moms to eat their eggs from their own chickens if they had them! Congrats and I know you will be a great Mom - am delighted to hear you have chosen to see a midwife.

I would definitely eat them. It would save you money also than having to go out and buy the store eggs. You will want to save any money you can to spend on the baby.

This is baby number 5 for me so im an old hand at it, ive always had a midwife its common practice in the UK.
I didnt eat eggs with the others because i didnt have chickens then and was never sure of how old the eggs were in the store!
pssssssssssssst im enjoying an egg sandwich as we speak..........dont tell my ob/gyn! lol

I'm confused, do doctors really tell new mom's not to eat eggs? Why are we all so scared of things that COULD happen. We are a society obsessed with germs and things. I live in the Amish community and if you saw half the things, that they allow their children to do, you would freak. I on the other hand, am not anymore. They raise their children in a natural way, and dirt, chicken poo and even slaughtered chicken blood all washes off. People are all afraid that their children are going to fall all the time, they put babies that are able to sit up, on top of tables, because they like to be up high, they only fall once if then. We are now living in a society that teaches children germs are bad (which most are not),

If you are seriously worried, take a sample to the vet and have them analyse it for Salmonella. Chickens can carry salmonella...it isn't just because eggs are old. The chickens harbor it and it can be passed down through the egg. I've had mine tested and they are salmonella negative.

In the UK we are advised not to eat eggs that arent cooked all the way through because of the risk of salmonella and listeria, to be honest if i thought there was a chance my eggs carry either i wouldnt be letting my children eat them let alone eating them myself!
Thanks all for the input, ive decided that a little of what i fancy does me good and the protein to be had from our fresh eggs wont do my unborn child any harm at all.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the handling of the eggs, just like it has to do with the handling of slaughtered poultry.

The eggs we eat, I wash and then refrigerate.

Eggs should be cooked to a temperature that you consider safe......

The poultry I have slaughtered, I cool it down quickly and then refrigerated it.

I believe it's the usual rules about food handling.....disinfecting, refrigeration and attention to detail.
