Protein for diet advice

I Find that my chickens waste the crumbles more than the pellets. I know my feeders are part of that. I still use all flock crumbles for my Silkies because that is what is easy to get in the 20%. Nothing else is needed besides a calcium on the side.

I also made 5-gallon versions of this. But don't use the kits available at feed stores, those are wasteful. Use PVC street ells like I have here.

...

Also any recommendations on the best way to wean them off of the crumble and into the pellets? (I also feel like pellets would reduce food waste but maybe that's just in my head)
That is easy. They are not like dogs or cats or catgle who need a gradual transition. Besides, there isn't much difference in the composition of each; crumble is essentially pellets that are pressed a little less in the pelletizer machine. Just put pellets in their feeder. They won't like it because they hate any change. But one will be adventurous enough to try it and the rest will follow.

I also think pellets are less wasteful unless you don't mind stirring water into the fines the crumbles leave and it doesn't freeze before they eat it.

That's what I do with the fines in the bottom of the feed bowls. I save it in a gallon tin, and use that for Chickie Snack. A scoop of that, some water to make a mash, and they scarf it down. It's your regular feed, ladies! Silly chickens.

Another plus is the mash can be dressed up with s a few tablespoons of BOSS, mealworms, kitchen scraps, whatever I have on hand. I can make it warm in the winter and cool in the summer too. Very little feed goes to waste here.
