Just from looking at the picture, the floor looks like 1/2" mesh, but the sides look like 1" mesh, which is not going to keep rodents out. I've even had mice get stuck in 1/2" mesh before, so they can fit. They are attracted to the feed. Without pictures of the wounds to the bird, it's hard to say, but I would remedy the mesh size on the sides to prevent further possible problems.
